The ruling party also won “unopposed” 14 of 19 panchayat samitis in Birbhum — panchayat elections are to be held in the state on May 1, 3 and 5. In Kandi in Murshidabad, the TMC won 29 of 30 panchayat samiti seats, again uncontested. In Bharatpur II, it won all 21 panchayat samit seats. It was the same story in Barwan where it wonall37panchayatsamitiseats. These drew an angry response from Opposition parties which accused the TMC of “rigging the polls” and reducing it to “a farce” by not letting others contest. The FIR was registered on Saturday, a day after around 2,000 BJP workers clashed with police in Nalhati. The same day, miscreants had allegedly hurled bombs and fired bullets at a group of BJP workers and their supporters—manyof themtribals — in Mohammad Bazar area. This had led to the group shootingarrowsattheirassailantsand injuring one person. “A good number of people from the tribal communitywere also a part of the mob that had gathered in the area. Around 56 people have been named in the FIR,” said a police officer. Police sources said many of those arrested are BJP workers and local residents of Birbhum.
