The provisional estimates of GDP, released by Central Statistics Office (CSO) Thursday, showed that while the overall growth rate for the full financial year (2017-18) is estimated at 6.7 per cent, up marginally from the second advance estimate of 6.6 per cent and first advance estimate of 6.5 per cent, it would be the slowest in four years and the lowest since the NDA government came to power. Henceforth, the storied US Pacific Command, or PACOM, which was formed after World War II, will be known as the US Indo-Pacific Command. “In recognition of the increasing connectivity, the Indian and Pacific Oceans, today we rename the US Pacific CommandtoUS Indo-Pacific Command,” Secretary of Defence James Mattis said Mattis while speaking makes it at a change of official command ceremony in Hawaii, where the command’s headquarters is located. The Pentagon’s move is also reflective of the growing importance of India in US strategic thinking. India was granted the Major Defence Partner status by the previous Barack Obama Administration, providing for transfer of technology and deeper cooperation in the defence sector. On Wednesday, Moody’s Investors Service cut its 2018 GDP growth outlook for India to 7.3 per cent from its earlier estimate of 7.5 per cent, citing surging oil prices and tighter financial conditions. According to the latest data, GDP growth rate for all three previousquartersof 2017-18has been revised downward from the second advance estimate released in February. The GDP growth rate for April-June has been revised lower to 5.6 per cent from 5.7 per cent in second advance estimate, for JulySeptember to 6.3 per cent from 6.5 per cent and for OctoberDecember to 7.0 per cent from 7.2 per cent estimated earlier. Askedwhenthegovernment could decide the cut, an official toldTheIndianExpress:“Maybe today, the meeting is on.” The Indian Express first reported on May 24 that the government is working on getting the ONGC to shoulder the burdenof risingfuelpricesasitisreluctant to cut the excise duty levied on petrol and diesel. The government’s plan was to direct ONGC to sell its crude oil at below ruling international prices by capping the price for the entire fiscal year. Oil India Ltd, the other national oil producer, will not be a part of this scheme. ONGC supplies an estimated 20 per cent of the country’s total crude oil requirement to refining-cum-marketing companies IOC, HPCL and BPCL. ONGC had asked for a higher price to fund its capital expenditure for the next two years. The 24-year-old tested positive for testosterone, which improves muscle strength and endurance of an athlete. If provenguiltyof drugabuse, Chanu faces a four-year suspension,whichwillendherhopesof competing in this year’s Asian Games as well as the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. The IWF did not mention whether she failed the test in a tournament or out of competition. “IWF reports that the sample of Ms. Sanjita Chamu Khumukcham has returned an Adverse Analytical Finding for Testosterone (S1.1 Anabolic Agents). As a consequence, the Athlete is provisionally suspended in view of a potential anti-doping rule violation,” the international federation said in a statement. A small box, added to the chapter on human life in the tropical and subtropical regions, in the Class 7 Geography textbookstates,“Toacceleratetheefforts to achieve universal sanitationcoverageandtoputfourson sanitation, the Prime Minister of India launched the ‘Swachh BharatMission’on02ndOctober 2014.” Chapter 6 of the Class 6 Geographybookreads:“Healthy mind lives in healthy body and forahealthybodycleanenvironmentparticularlycleanwater,air and hygienic surroundings are pre-requisites. Swachh Bharat Mission, a government of India programme aims to achieve all these for people.” This chapter is on the major landforms of the Earthsuchasmountains,plateau and the plains. That apart, Swachh Bharat Mission also makes an appearance in the chapter titled ‘Garbage In, Garbage Out’ of the Class6sciencebook,inthechapter on urban administration in political science book for Class 6 students and chapter 18 on waste water treatment in the Class 7 science textbook. ■ The NDA-II government’s controversial decision to demonetiseallRs500andRs1,000 currency notes in 2016 is mentioned (about 260 words) in the CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 swords, knives online RASHMI RAJPUT MUMBAI, MAY 31 POLICE IN Maharashtra are probing the possibility of levelling criminal conspiracy charges against Flipkart after the Aurangabad Crime Branch recovered a consignment of 30 weapons, including 12 swords and 16 knives, that were allegedly ordered online through the e-commerce firm. According to police, orders for most of the consignments were placed on May 16 by 24 local residents and the weapons reached a courier company’s office for delivery on May 21. The orders were placed days after Aurangabad witnessed clashes over rumours of water connections being disconnected, leadingtocommunalriotsonMay11 and12inwhichaboywaskilled. The orders were placed underthecategoriesof ‘toyswords’ and‘kitchenappliances’,saidpolice. The state’s Anti Terrorism Squad is also part of the probe. Speaking to The Indian Express, ADGP (Law and Order), Bipin Bihari, said: “We are exploringalllegaloptionsforbooking Flipkart for providing and transporting, knowingly or unknowingly, such dangerous material.
