PhotoDNA is currently at the centre of a debate in Europe, wheretheEU’sEuropeanPrivacy Regulation is moving to effectively ban social media companies from using this software to proactively scan billions of images for child abuse. Companies such as Twitter, Microsoft, YouTubeandFacebookdonotallow use of this software to be used, even exclusively for blockingextremistcontentorterrorist messaging. Therewere5,917instancesof bank fraud in 2017-18 as against 5,076 cases the previous year, showthedatareleasedFriday(see box,page2).Theinstancesoffraud havebeenrisingoverthelastfour years — by four times from Rs 10,170 crore in 2013-14. Banks reported more cyber frauds duringtheyear,losingRs109.6crore in 2,059 cases in 2017-18 as against Rs 42.3 crore with 1,372 cases the previous year. Significantly, 93 per cent of fraud cases worth more than Rs 1 lakh occurred in PSU banks while private banks accounted for six per cent.
