Wife waits in camp, Major killed in Jammu and Kashmir encounter

On October 5, Major J S Suri would have turned 30. He had planned to celebrate his birthday with his wife, S Pallavi, by the picturesque Manasbal lake where his 13 Rashtriya Rifles unit is deployed. Pallavi arrived at the 13 RR regimental centre in Manasbal a few days ago.

On Wednesday, Major Suri was killed in a major encounter with militants in Bandipore in North Kashmir. Pallavi is in shock. They were married only last year.

“She seemed to have guessed last night that something was wrong... confusing reports about Maj. Suri were coming in from the encounter site,” said an Army officer who was part of the 45-hour operation to flush out the militants holed up on an island on Wular lake.

“She is in a state of shock. Officers and jawans of the unit are trying to console her.

Kerala points north, makes terror arrest: There’s a Valley link

Almost a fortnight after a suspected militant from Kerala was killed by security agencies in North Kashmir, the state police today arrested Abdul Jaleel, 38, a resident of Kannur. Jaleel, an activist of Kerala-based right wing Muslim outfit National Development Front (NDF), is alleged to have had close links with the suspected militant.

According to state intelligence sources, Jaleel, had been under the police radar for some time now following law and order issues in his locality of Edakkadu in Kannur. A painter by profession, he was allegedly active in propagating fundamentalism. He had also taken part in a recent rally organised by the NDF in Kannur to protest against the Indo-US nuclear deal.

While tracking his movements, police reportedly stumbled upon several mobile phone calls that Jaleel had received from Kashmir till October 5, two days before the encounter in Kupwara in which the suspected militant from Kerala was killed.

From Udupi: 3 calls, a ‘Bhai’ and 10 bombs

Mohammad Saif, who was arrested from L-18, Jamia Nagar, after an encounter last Friday, and Shadab Bhai, who is on the run, boarded Mangala Express from Udupi on August 29 with 10 bombs, investigators have discovered.

One of the bombs was defective the rest were planted in Delhi’s markets on September 13. The Delhi Police Special Cell took Saif to Udupi on Monday.

Saif and Shahdab reached Udupi on August 28 night by the Nizamuddin-Eranakulam Mangala Express. They travelled AC three-tier, one of them in the name of Rahul Sharma. At 2.30 am, they checked into room No 207 of New Broadway hotel, costing Rs 250/night .
